The 500 Lire coin is a bimetallic Italian coin issued from 1982 to 2001, featuring the following:

 

Obverse (Front) Winged Female Head: A profile of a female head with wings, symbolizing the Italian Republic and its intelligence and freedom.

 

Designer's Signature: The designer's signature, such as L. Cretara, appears below the head.

 

Repubblica Italiana: The inscription "Repubblica Italiana" (Italian Republic) is present.

 

Star: A five-pointed star is featured.

 

Reverse (Back)Piazza del Quirinale: A perspective view of the Piazza del Quirinale, the location of the Presidential Palace in Rome.

 

Minting Year 1985: The year the coin was minted is shown at the bottom.

 

Braille: The coin value, "L. 500," is inscribed in Braille.

 

Mints Symbol: The letter R, representing the Rome mint, is to the left of the year.

 

Wheat and Olive Branch: An ear of wheat and an olive branch flank the inscription, symbolizing peace and prosperity.

 

Discontinuous Striped Edge: The outside edge of the coin has a discontinuous striped pattern.

 

This 1989 coin has a major minting error on the obverse side with a partially raised cental edge due to a smaller die leaving the mark.  In addition, the time period has numismatic historic significance.  This 1989 coin is a great addition to any coin collection especially for an Italian coin history enthusiast.
