The Seychelles is an independent republic and its ownership resides with its citizens, not with any specific external entity. It was formerly a British colony, but it gained independence in 1976. The country is now a multi-party republic with its own government.
The Seychelles 1 Rupee coin was first issued in 1951 during the British colonial period. It was the highest denomination coin in circulation at the time. The coin was made of silver.
In 1954 it wqs redesigned with copper-nickel.
The reverse side of the coin depicts the British Coat of Arms. The coin is round and has a milled edge. It weighs 11.474 grams and has a diameter of 30 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the monarch of the United Kingdom and the British Empire at the time. The portrait is surrounded by the inscription "QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND".d the coat of arms of Seychelles.
